This guide is intended to help problem-solve an inoperable Kalk. It was kindly written and shared by Barry (@insitedesign on the CAKE Riders Club).
Bike not running as normal. Bike may be experiencing the following symptoms:
- bike appears to have power but Kalk OR dashboard does not light up, and might not chime as usual
- Kalk & models with digital displays may act differently but the result is similar
- bike might be able to run, but in a restricted power Mode 1
It’s likely that this is caused by the battery failing or in the process of failing. A failing battery might look like:
- bike runs but won’t turn off
- bike dashboard not responding as normal
- bike stops running when at load but then resumes after a restart
- a number of other abnormal behavior, it’s usually the Battery’s BMS failing and needs replacing
- To test a battery, using a multimeter check the voltage at the -/+ contacts on the bottom of the battery. A good battery will read 30v to 40v max. Failing or failed batteries will read 50v or more.
CAUTION:
- if the battery is failing and remains in operation, it can damage the controller
- even using the battery for testing the bike can lead to the failure of the controller
See the following guide: Diagnosing failed GND fuse in the Osa/Kalk controller
Ultimately, if the GND fuse in the controller has failed due to the battery overload then the controller needs to be repaired or replaced.
